Greater Taung Local Municipality

Greater Taung Local Municipality was formed in 2000 through the merger of Reivilo Municipality and Pudimoe Transitional Council, with Mr. Nicholas Khonkhobe as its inaugural Mayor. Spanning 5,639 km², it stands as the largest of five local municipalities in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District (North West Province) and operates as a Category B municipality under a collective governance system.

This vibrant rural municipality is home to 177,642 residents across 48,642 households, 133 settlements, and 24 wards, with a demographic composition of 98.2% Black Africans and 1.8% other racial groups. Its administrative hubs are located in Taung, Reivilo, and Pudimoe. Beyond governance, Taung boasts iconic tourism sites like the Taung Skull (a UNESCO heritage site), Thomeng Waterfalls, and Dinkgwaneng, which drive local tourism and job creation. The municipality also fosters youth development through institutions like the Taung College of AgricultureMmabana Arts Foundation, and proximity to North West University, ensuring skills growth for future generations.
